On his first day as Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Port Vila Clinic, Dr Andronico Ly was warmly received by the nursing and admin staff. They gave him a traditional welcome and many encouraging words for his new role, all of them excited to work together to restore and preserve sight in Vanuatu. There is a lot of work to be done, he said, but he is confident that both he and the team will succeed.
Dr Ly was appointed to the position by Vanuatu’s Ministri blong Helt (Ministry of Health and Medical Services), one of The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ’s longest-standing and most valued partners. Previously, he was employed as the Head of Department for Ophthalmology in Timor Leste and worked with many Pacific ophthalmologists and nurses across the region. He has also attended many eye care outreaches.
Dr Ly is a graduate of Fiji National University, which partners with the Pacific Eye Institute, an initiative of The Foundation, to offer postgraduate courses on the specific eye care needs in the Pacific. He will be working closely with local ophthalmologist Dr Johnson Kasso who leads the eye programme in the northern part of Vanuatu.
Dr Ly arrived in Vanuatu with his wife and two children, all of whom are excited to explore their new home.
