Introducing our new Gift of Sight shop

This year's Gift of Sight shop has just launched with a brand-new selection of cards and gifts, plus a few returning favourites.

Once again, we have partnered with Rise Beyond the Reef to create a custom collection of gifts produced by artisans in Fiji. Rise Beyond the Reef is a Fijian social enterprise addressing rural remote Fijian communities’ unique development needs. They are focused on improving women and children’s lives through sustainable income-generating projects that use traditional skills and materials. For example, several of the items in our collection were screen-printed by a team of master and apprentice printers through the Rise Beyond the Reef studio print program. This program provides professional job training opportunities to youth who come from rural partner communities, including persons with disabilities.

Featured in this year's shop is a canvas table runner with a senibua flower print – the perfect backdrop to your Christmas table spread, and a small pouch with a vibrant orange print – great as travel or make-up bag. Thanks to our supporters, Indigo & Iris, we have a small selection of these pouches on offer with their vegan levitate mascara. We also have a blue canvas pencil case that comes with a free Fred Hollows pencil. To reduce fabric waste, each of these pencil cases is lined with off-cut fabric, making each one unique!

Finally, returning due to popular demand are the hand-sewn toy turtles. Each turtle is made by women artisans in the Yakete District of the Ba Province of Fiji – one of the largest remaining areas containing pristine Fijian forests and populated by indigenous communities that lead subsistence lifestyles. These turtles are made in winning colour combinations of scrap material, so no two are the same. These were the first items to sell out last year, so get in quick if you want to grab one this year.

As well as the Rise Beyond the Reef produced gifts, we have a very special new addition, the Freddy Bear. Modelled after our founder, Professor Fred Hollows, this teddy bear helps to restore sight to people living with avoidable blindness in the Pacific. Freddy Bear is 30 cm high from head to toe, and comes dressed in his special surgical scrubs, hat and securely attached glasses. He is made of clean, recycled materials and is ethically produced in a factory that adheres to the International Ethical Code of Conduct.
